The European Commission will launch on 22 February 2006 a Proposal for the creation of a European Institute of Technology, with a start-up budget of up to €2bn. Commission President José Manuel Barroso believes such an Institute would 'act as a pole of attraction for the very best minds, ideas and companies from around the world,' but he is facing strong opposition from academics.
