Euractiv reported that the United Kingdom and its free trade allies were trying to convince France and Italy in the autumn of 2012 to agree to negotiations with Japan to create a free-trade area with the European Union despite concerns that a deal would hurt the continent's weaker carmakers. The plan is part of the EU's ambition to sign free-trade deals on behalf of its 27 member states with major economies, including Canada and the United States, in the hope that trade will help revive stagnant demand in the European Union. The FT reported on the 29 November 2012 that the Member States decided that the EU would launch negotiations with Japan on a bilateral trade agreement that would be the world’s largest after the member states brushed aside concerns from the EU’s struggling carmakers. |
