Leaders discussed: + an adapted framework for bilateral trade and investment Foreign and security policy issues Leaders exchanged views on the situation in their respective neighbourhoods (Ukraine, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, and Central America), and the participation of Mexico to UN peace keeping operations. They seized the opportunity to discuss migration and in particular the establishment of an EU naval operation to disrupt the business model of human smugglers in the Mediterranean. They also discussed security and rule of law challenges in Mexico, and the issue of human rights. The EU will support the Mexican government's efforts to ensure the security of its citizens and the respect for human rights. The summit was a timely opportunity to discuss climate change, and the post-2015 development agenda. In terms of environment, the EU welcomes the organisation by Mexico of a convention of biodiversity in December 2016. The summit also recognised the importance of anti-drugs policies. The EU and Mexico repeated their commitment to a strong cooperation and coordination in view of the 2016 UN conference on the World Drug Problem. |
