Directors of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) failed in May 2011 to agree on a new chief executive, creating fresh uncertainty and delay in the leadership of the organisation responsible for assessing the safety and efficacy of drugs for patients across the EU.

The decision is likely to leave the agency without a leader at least until the autumn of 2011, at a time it is facing intensifying scrutiny over conflicts of interest and the transparency of its operations.
