The Treaty of the European Coal and Steel Community expired on 23 July 2002. The European Coal and Steel Community formally entered into force on 23 July 1952 to help the rebuilding of Europe and prevent further wars between France and Germany. Much of the ECSC's role has been incorporated into the European Union following the Treaty of Rome in 1957.
