At a meeting of the European Council in Ghent on 19 October 2001, European Union leaders agreed to uphold the EU's growth and stability pact and accelerate the structural reforms agreed in 2000. They also accepted that the European Central Bank would only be able to significantly ease monetary policy if inflation fell by more than already expected. |
