EU launches plan to boost R&D spending

The European Union launched a €17.5bn research programme on 11 November 2002 with renewed commitments to create a unified European Research Area and to increase expenditure on research and development. The programme will be known as Framework Six and was launched at the biggest research conference in EU history, 'Research 2002'. Framework Six will run until 2007 and will concentrate on life science and health, information technology, nanotechnology and aerospace.
