EUObserver and other news sources reported on the disagreement between legal opinion at the European Commission and the Council of the European Union in September 2013 on the legality of the proposed financial transactions tax (FTT) for 11 EU countries. According to a report by the Commission's legal team that EUObserver gained access to, the EU's financial transactions tax is legal and would not discriminate against countries outside its remit. It then rubbished claims by governments that the financial transactions tax could break international law. The French deputy minister for development told EurActiv France in an interview that Europe's planned financial transaction tax (FTT) would be the best solution to address cash shortages for global development and climate policies. |
