Summary:EU forests are multifunctional, serving environmental, economic and social purposes. Although forest cover has grown in the past 30 years, the condition of forests is deteriorating. Sustainable management practices are key to maintaining biodiversity and addressing climate change in forests. We found that, in the areas where the EU is fully competent to act, the Commission could have taken stronger action to contribute to the protection of EU forests. We make recommendations to the Commission to improve this contribution, strengthen the fight against illegal logging and improve the focus of rural development forestry measures on biodiversity and climate change. |
