EU funding allocations:
LIFE. The European Commission has decided to co-fund 116 LIFE-Environment demonstration projects in the area of actions for the environment for 1998. The total contribution from the Commission is € 48.6m. Waste and water issues dominate among the industry projects, whereas most of the local authority projects deal with planning, waste and water treatment.

In a separate announcement the Commission has published the list of nature conservation projects which will receive funding under the LIFE-Nature programme. In 1998, eighty five projects have been selected, which will receive 48m ECU. Beneficiaries include local and regional public authorities and NGOs, with a move away from bird protection projects to a protection of habitat types and species other than birds.
