On 30 June 2016 the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament agreed on revised rules for the fishing of deep sea species in the EU and CECAF waters.

The agreed draft regulation aimed to ensure the sustainable exploitation of deep sea stocks while reducing the environmental impact of these fisheries.

The European Commission first released the proposal in July 2012, but it faced the rejection from the European Parliament in December 2013. The Council of the European Union approved its position in November 2015, paving the way for negotiations.
