EU commissioner praises Lithuania

The European Union initialed a trade facilitation agreement with Lithuania on 24 July 2001. The agreement, known as a Protocol to the Europe Agreement on Conformity Assessment (PECA), will extend certain benefits of the EU's single market to Lithuania, and will mark the first step towards establishing the EU Single Market in industrial sectors for which Lithuania has aligned its legislation with that of the EU. Günter Verheugen, European Union Commissioner for Enlargement, said that he thought Lithuania would be among the first candidate countries to join the European Union by 2004.
