The European Union closed its airspace to most of Iran Air’s jets on the 6 July 2010, four days after the US imposed the most comprehensive package of sanctions on Tehran for more than a decade. The EU said the move was prompted by safety concerns and was unrelated to the US-led drive to isolate Iran because of its nuclear ambitions. However, two-thirds of Iran Air’s fleet is now prohibited from entering EU airspace after a safety audit found that its Boeing 727s and 747s, along with its Airbus 320s, were not being properly maintained. In total, the ban applies to 41 of Iran Air’s 64 aircraft. |
