EU backs formal trade ties with Iran

European Union Foreign Ministers agreed on 17 June 2002 to launch formal trade relations with Iran, despite pressure from the United States and Israel which lobbied hard to delay negotiations or impose strict conditions. When it is concluded, the Trade and Co-operation Agreement could greatly boost trade between the two sides.
