EU and US agree truce in effort to avert trade war

The immediate threat of a serious trade conflict between the US and the European Union has been lifted following an agreement on how to handle a dispute over US tax breaks for exporters. Their deal postpones until well into 2001 the possibility of the EU imposing duties worth more than $4bn against US exporters in retaliation for what Brussels sees as Washington's failure to comply with international trade rules.
