Background and further information:

The United Nations' General Assembly adopted on 21 December 2016 the Resolution 71/248 establishing an 'International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011' (IIIM or 'the Mechanism').

This Resolution constitutes a building block to ensure accountability for the crimes committed by all parties in the context of the conflict in Syria.

The European Union announced on 19 July 2017 the allocation of €1.5 million to support the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Those Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic.
