The Estonia parliament elected on 3 October 2016 the country's first female president. Kersti Kaljulaid, a former member of the European Court of Auditors, was set to start a five-year mandate after gathering the support of 81 out of 101 members of the parliament. Ms Kaljulaid was seen as a compromise candidate, after the initial presidential candidates failed to gather support to be elected in previous phases, which included parliamentary and electoral college rounds. |
