On 20 January 2017 the European Commission issued a press release stating that the Essen town of Germany was officially to become the European Green Capital for 2017. Essen has seen a successful transformation from coal and steel to the greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, by employing such measures as setting ambitious targets of reducing CO2 emissions and high recycling targets.
