Summary: Report published by the European Commission on 8 September 2022, comprising the annual Environmental Implementation Review (EIR). Further information: The Environmental Implementation Review (EIR) aims to help Member States of the European Union (EU) put in place environmental policies. It is a reporting tool that complements EU environmental legislation. The European Commission promotes implementation of EU environmental rules through technical support, guidance, EU funding and, where appropriate, initiating infringement proceedings that can result in substantial fines. The Commission works with Member States to enable them to better apply environmental policies and rules, through the process of the EIR. The tool also raises public awareness about the importance of implementing environmental rules and main challenges. This is the third Environmental Implementation Review. It draws conclusions and defines common trends at EU level, based on 27 individual country reports showing the state of play in the implementation of EU environmental law. It includes a wealth of information about how well EU governments are protecting the quality of the air citizens breathe, the water they drink and the nature they enjoy. Furthermore, the review sets out priority actions for improvement in each Member State. It was adopted by the European Commission 8 September 2022. |
