There were 19.6 million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the EU-27 non-financial business economy in 2005, 99.8% of all businesses. Their impact in terms of employment and added value varies substantially between economic sectors and across countries. The importance also varies substantially between the component size class brackets, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
