At the beginning of the new century, Europe has unprecedented stability, security, prosperity and liberty. The European Union of 15 democracies is stable and mature. The single market continues to develop its commercial and social dimensions. The EU is already the world's largest trading bloc with a proportion of world trade bigger than that of the US, a net current account surplus, and combined wealth within touching distance of the US. Monetary union is a reality and efforts are being made to refresh the design for the future of Europe The author is Vice President of the European Commission. |
