The European Parliament's plenary session endorsed on 26 October 2016 a draft directive laying down the first EU-wide rules to ensure that the websites and apps of public sector bodies are made more accessible to users, in particular persons with disabilities.

The web accessibility directive should make it easier for disabled and elderly people to access data and services on the internet. The draft proposal was informally agreed between the Parliament and the Council in May 2016, with the latter formally confirming that agreement in July.
