Background: The proposal was put forward by the European Commission in June 2017, upon submission of an application by Spain requesting funds from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund in January. The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) provides support to people losing their jobs as a result of major structural changes in world trade patterns due to globalisation, e.g. when a large company shuts down or production is moved outside the EU, or as a result of the global economic and financial crisis. The European Parliament's plenary session approved on 4 July 2017 the allocation of around €1 million to help redundant workers from five companies within Spain's mining sector. |
