The Council of the European Union formally adopted on 21 March 2017 a legislative proposal establishing an information exchange mechanism for intergovernmental agreements and non-binding instruments between member states and third countries in the field of energy. The aim of the draft law is to correct shortcomings in the previous information exchange mechanism on energy contracts. The adopted proposal is a result of a compromise following discussions with the remaining institutions. The draft law was put forward by the European Commission in February 2016 as part of an energy security package of proposals. An informal agreement with the European Parliament was reached in December 2016. The chamber endorsed the compromise text on 2 March 2017. It was therefore ready to be published in the Official Journal. |
