The European Parliament's plenary session approved on 2 February 2017 a temporary stabilisation mechanism to protect banana growers in the European Union against any surge in imports from Ecuador after its accession to the trade deal between the EU, Colombia and Peru. The trade agreement was signed in November 2016 and endorsed by the Parliament in December. The stabilisation mechanism was put forward by the European Commission in May 2015 and an informal agreement between the Parliament and the Council of the European Union was reached in December 2016. |
