The president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, addressed the plenary session on 14 December 2016 to sum up his five years in the office.

Mr Schulz had announced in November 2016 that we would not seek another term as the Parliament's president.

Following the election of Antonio Tajani as the new President of the European Parliament in January 2017 it emerged that Martin Schulz would continue for the forseeable future as an MEP receiving a full salary and expenses, despite his plans to re-enter national politics in Germany.
