Date: 10/04/1997 Mixing business with pleasure never works: pity poor Economics Commissioner Yves-Thibault de Silguy trying to brief the press on a single currency in the lobby of a very smart seaside hotel in Noordwijk last weekend. Just as he had captured the attention of a large huddle of journalists, the hotel's resident bar-room crooner slipped into his seat at a handsome grand piano nearby and struck up The Girl from Ipanema. The aghast hacks turned in horror as the music obliterated De Silguy's message. Unfortunately, the pianist mistook the attention for enthusiasm from an appreciative audience and attacked the keyboard with renewed gusto. As one, the assembled reporters roared “Shhhhhhhhhh!” and the musician slunk away in shame and embarrassment. It is time to ask whether it is right that culture is being sacrificed on the high altar of a single currency... |
