An £8.8 million compensation package from the Welsh Assembly Government is to be made available to sheep farmers in Wales to deal with the effects of the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in England, Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones announced 20 February 2008. The Welsh Assembly Government package will need to be approved by the European Commission under state aid rules. The Commission will be looking in particular at assurance that the proposed scheme does not over-compensate. |
