The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) is an autonomous body of the European Union, established to contribute to and strengthen the promotion of gender equality, including gender mainstreaming in all EU policies and the resulting national policies, and the fight against discrimination based on sex, as well as to raise EU citizens’ awareness of gender equality.

The seat of the European Institute for Gender Equality is in Vilnius (Lithuania). It was officially launched in June 2010. EIGE’s third Multi Annual Work Programme for the years 2016-2018 aimed to build on the Institute’s capacities to provide good quality, unique data to assist policy makers working in gender equality and related sectors across the European Union and beyond.

During the period of 2016-2018, EIGE would work to further refine the quality of its unique products: the Gender Equality Index, the Online platform supporting gender mainstreaming; the Progress Reports on Beijing, EIGE’s database of gender statistics, whether through improved methodologies, the identification of better quality data or the preparation of outputs specifically tailored to meet the needs of stakeholders.

EIGE would also make available new data and address data gaps, particularly in the domain of gender-based violence. Furthermore and to increase the impact of its main actions, the Institute would explore the most effective ways of communicating its main products.
