The education sector has gained a permanent presence in the Bank’s lending portfolio since 1997. Investment in education, of critical importance to European economic development and growth, is central to the Lisbon Agenda. It constitutes one of the three components of the EIB’s Innovation 2010 Initiative (i2i) and as such is one of the top lending priorities for the Bank. Since the launch of i2i in 2000, loans signed under the initiative have amounted to EUR 55.0 billion, of which about EUR 12.0 billion for Education and Training and EUR 30.1 billion for Research and Development (R&D). In June 2008, Promoting a Competitive Knowledge Economy in the 21st Century (Knowledge Economy) replaced the Innovation 2010 Initiative (i2i). Education and Training features as prominently in Knowledge Economy as it did under the i2i lending programme. Between January 1997 and December 2007, the EIB lent approximately EUR 14.6 billion for investment in education and training, of which about EUR 8.3 billion in Higher Education. |
