The UK's Finance Minister, Gordon Brown, has made economic reform the priority for the UK's Presidency of the European Union, July-December 2005. Mr Brown used a written statement at a Cabinet meeting on 26 May 2005 to set out his view that economic reform must carry on despite the outcome of various referendums on the European constitutional treaty.
