Summary: Communication published by the European Commission on 2 June 2021, providing an overview to economic policy coordination across the European Union (EU) in the framework of the 2021 cycle of the European Semester. Further information: An effective policy coordination under the European Semester is seen as essential to secure a stronger growth path in the aftermath of the crisis triggered by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. This year's European Semester cycle was adapted to allow for the launch of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), but it was still designed to support policy discussions among Member States, exchange of best practices and agreements on a common way forward. In the context of the RRF, Member States are required in their National Recovery and Resilience Plans (NRRPs) to effectively address all or a significant subset of challenges identified in the relevant Country-Specific Recommendations (CSRs), including a number of fiscal aspects. Beyond the scope of the Facility, those recommendations that are not addressed remain valid and under monitoring in the framework of the European Semester. This Communication was published on 2 June 2021 as part of the spring package of the European Semester. It is accompanying by a set of Staff Working Documents (SWDs) comprising in-depth reviews for individual Member States in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 1179/2011 on the prevention and correction of macroeconomic imbalances. The Council of the European Union adopted conclusions concerning the set of in-depth reviews published under the macroeconomic imbalance procedure at a meeting on 13 July 2021. |
