The last resistance to Italian Parmesan in Europe is set to crumble after the European Court of Justice ruled on the 26 February 2008 that German producers should not be able to market their cheese under the famous name. The Germans had argued that the term was generic but the European Court of Justice found that protection granted to Parmigiano Reggiano under European Union law as a ‘protected designation of origin’ extended to all Parmesan.
