European Central Bank chief economist Jürgen Stark resigned on the 9 September 2011 amid speculation of conflicts within the ECB over its bond-buying programme and exposing the deepening divisions over the bank’s handing of the eurozone debt crisis.

In the following days Germany confirmed that it would nominate Jörg Asmussen, its top international troubleshooter in the financial crisis, to join the executive board of the European Central Bank to replace Mr Stark.
