Article considers who will succeed Wim Duisenberg as President of the European Central Bank when he retires in July 2003. It had been informally acknowledged that the French candidate Jean-Claude Trichet would succeed Mr Duisenberg. However, it now seems likely that Mr Trichet will go on trial in France early in 2003 for his role in a banking scandal.
