Paul Wolfowitz, nominated by the US Government to head the World Bank, has been invited to meet the European Commission. The nomination has shocked many Europeans who know Mr Wolfowitz only as a leading campaigner for the US-led invasion of Iraq, and a supporter of using US military power unilaterally. There are fears that, if confirmed in his post, Mr Wolfowitz's position would make it difficult for the World Bank to work effectively in the Middle East. |
