The fall of the Netherlands' government in April 2012 after budget-cut negotiations collapsed was widely taken as a sign of a gathering revolt against European Union-imposed austerity measures. However, the writer disagrees. Across the political spectrum, every Dutch party in parliament agreed on the need for budget cuts and tax hikes to bring down the budget deficit. The disagreements were not over whether to cut, but how much, how soon, and who should pay. On the 26 April 2012 an agreement was reached by a five-party coalition on how to slash the Dutch budget deficit to meet eurozone targets. A definitive agreement was announced on the 16 May 2012. |
