Don't hold your breath waiting to learn how much the holder of Europe's most powerful executive post is being paid.

For it appears that European Central Bank President Wim Duisenberg has decided to continue his practice, adopted at the Nederlandsche Bank, of keeping his salary confidential. A committee of six 'wise men' is putting together Duisenberg's package of pay and terms of employment, and it is hard to believe that he will be paid less than the 300,000 ecu a year earned by Bundesbank president Hans Tietmeyer.

But the ECB will not even confirm who it nominated to the panel. As European taxpayers are footing Duisenberg's bill, surely they have a right to know how much his services will cost?
