A BAN has been placed on imports of several types of fish and meat from China after EU inspectors found traces of an illegal drug.

Officials at the Union's food and veterinary office detected chloramphenicol - a potent antibiotic banned as a food additive in the EU since 1994 - in Chinese shrimp and prawns. The shellfish ban will run until the end of February when the Commission will decide if it should be extended.

In addition, the trade restrictions will apply to rabbit, chicken, crabs and pet food. In all, imports of the affected products were worth €328 million in 2000.
