Summary: The European Union and the United Kingdom reached on 22 November 2018 an agreement regarding a draft political declaration setting out the framework for the relationship between the two sides after the end of the transition period in the context of the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union. The document was formally endorsed by the European Council on 25 November. Further information: It sets out the scope and terms of the future UK-EU relationship. It provides instructions to negotiators working to deliver a framework for the relationship by the end of the so-called transition period. It covers an economic partnership, a security partnership and agreements on areas of shared interest. This draft framework was initially agreed at negotiators' level and agreed in principle at political level, subject to endorsement by Leaders. This document is not legally binding and expands from an outline agreed between negotiators earlier in the month. Formal negotiations on its content would only begin once the UK's withdrawal was made effective. |
