Date: 13/02/03 THE Greek presidency has warned MEPs not to scupper a hard-fought deal on pensions agreed by EU governments. The warning - issued during behind-closed-doors talks in Strasbourg - came as deputies in the Parliament's economic and monetary affairs committee prepare to vote on a raft of amendments next Tuesday (17 February). The draft law is designed to allow multinationals to offer the same pension scheme to all their EU employees. Some MEPs, including Austrian Christian Democrat rapporteur Othmar Karas, want to add changes such as common levels of social protection and guaranteed lifelong payments to pensioners. But the Greeks said last year's deal between member states was so finely balanced that even one amendment could trigger a lengthy 'conciliation' procedure - the system for thrashing out disagreements between Parliament and member states. The Greek presidency has warned MEPs not to scupper a hard-fought deal on pensions agreed by EU governments when they vote on a raft of amendments on 17 February 2003. |
