European Council President Donald Tusk testified on 19 April 2017 as a witness in an investigation on two military counter-intelligence officers who allegedly 'overstepped their duties by collaborating with services of a foreign state' without authorisation. At the core of this case lies an agreement struck between Polish and Russian intelligence services. While some reports suggest it aimed at cooperating on the withdrawal of Polish troops from NATO operations in Afghanistan, other say it allowed Russian agents to visit Poland's military counter-intelligence agency unfettered The agreement was also struck shortly after a plane crash in Russia which killed scores of senior Polish officials in 2010, including Poland's President Lech KaczyĆski. Mr Tusk was prime minister at the time. He reacted to this investigation as a political 'witch-hunt'. This investigation unfolded in parallel with another on the reasons behind the plane crash and in the aftermath of Mr Tusk's reelection as European Council president, without the support of Poland's government. |
