On 23 and 24 March 2001 the European Council met in Stockholm to discuss how the European Union would continue its work of modernising the economy of Europe and the European social model. The meeting in Stockholm was the first in a series of Spring summits intended to assess the progress of the EU towards reaching the goals set in Lisbon in 2000. Items discussed included how the EU will proceed in order to achieve common European markets for securities, gas, electricity, telecommunications, postal services and the transport sector; the common demographic challenge faced by the whole of Europe. |
