Doctors ‘should be paid for on-call time’

The European Court of Justice ruled on 9 September 2003 that time spent by doctors on call at a hospital should count as working time, even if they are resting while waiting for their services to be required. The ruling will have huge financial implications for hospitals but it also applies to anyone who is required by their employer to be on call in a place designated by that employer.
