Summary:Directive 2009/125/EC - adopted by the co-legislators on 21 October 2009 - recasting a framework for the setting of eco-design requirements for energy-related products. This is a text with EEA relevance. Further information:This Directive establishes a framework for the setting of Community eco-design requirements for energy-related products with the aim of ensuring the free movement of such products within the internal market. It also provides for the setting of requirements which the energy-related products covered by implementing measures must fulfil in order to be placed on the market and/or put into service. Despite a range of policies and instruments put in place to foster more efficient products and improve information to consumers, a number of significant obstacles still hampered these policies to reach their full impact. Existing voluntary and regulatory instruments were not sufficiently connected with each other or elaborated from a single policy perspective. Fragmentation of national and regional approach sent conflicting signals to producers and created distortions in the internal market. This Act is a recast of Directive 2005/32/EC (also known as the Ecodesign Directive). The aim of the recasting was to incorporate the amending Directive 2008/28/EC and to extend its scope to allow for the setting of Community eco-design requirements also for all energy related products. Establishing a single framework for the eco-design of energy-related products seeks to ensure efficiency and consistency by using a common methodology for setting requirements for such products in the European Union (EU). The extension of the product scope of theĀ Ecodesign Directive was seen as a cornerstone of the Sustainable Consumption and Production and Sustainable Industry Policy (SCP/SIP) Action Plan. The draft law was adopted by the European Commission on 25 June 2008. The co-legislators signed the Act on 21 October 2009. It was published in the Official Journal on 31 October 2009. |
