Abstract: Even though Turkey has the longest parliamentary history in the Middle East, there are no signs that her distance from the Western political model has lessened. In fact, during the post-Özal decade, the military succeeded in augmenting its political and financial power vis--vis ambitious domestic pressure groups and rising economic interests to such a level that civilian supremacy became an even harder task for Erdoan's administrations.
