AgriNet

The EU-AgriNet portal has been launched at http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/agriculture/index_en.html to provide information about research support for agriculture. The site offers background information about past and current research, publications, events and - what will no doubt be the favourite part of the site - relevant support measures and sources of funding.

Sweet & Maxwell acquire Lawtel

The legal publisher Sweet & Maxwell, part of the Thomson Corporation, has acquired the online legal information service Lawtel from Centaur Communications. Sweet & Maxwell's business already included Westlaw UK which like Lawtel offers substantial EU content. Westlaw UK's EU information is sourced from Ellis Publications, also part of the Thomson Corporation, and is basically a commercial version of the CELEX database. The foundation of Lawtel's EU data was the former Spicers Centre for Europe database established in 1987. This originally provided short well indexed abstracts with full bibliographic details but in the Lawtel service it has been developed to include links to full text sources and related material as well as a range of current update services. Though the Westlaw and Lawtel services are different there is nevertheless overlap and it remains to be seen whether, and if so how, the services will be rationalised.
