Local Government International Bureau - EIS goes online

LGIB's new web site (http://www.lgib.gov.uk/) with its dramatic initial screen was launched in November 1998. It contains information about the Bureau and the Committee of the Regions, as well as sections still to be developed such as news on twinning activities, but the key feature is the introduction of an on-line version of the well-known European Information Service aimed primarily at local government and the publicsector. Subscription to the printed version will allow access also to EIS Online. Current rates are £130 for Local Government Association local authorities, a special rate of £195 for EIA or UACES members and £260 for others. However, until 1 April 1999 there is a free trial using the user name 'eis' and password 'guest' to allow potential users to evaluate the benefits. The printed bulletin issued ten times per year is basically a current awareness tool, giving updates on EU policy, legislation and funding, and analysis of topical issues as well as details of new publications, conferences and events. Going on-line means that it is now simple to search through back issues. New data will normally be mounted before the printed copy is delivered and there will be the additional bonus of news flashes of information that would otherwise be out of date by the time it was published. Issues from no.172, August 1996 are currently available and one approach is to select an issue number, display the contents and click on the hyperlink of the record of interest to see the full text. Alternatively, the basic but effective search engine can be used to produce a list of relevant hits. Test it for yourself at http://www.lgib.gov.uk/eis/.
