The Bureau of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe adopted, on 10 February 2014, a Declaration on 'Regional and minority languages in Europe today'.

The languages spoken within the European Union are one of its main natural assets. Promoting the use of these European languages calls for strategic and careful planning. On the 5 February 2015, the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD) launched the European Roadmap for Linguistic Diversity for a consultation period. After that a final version will be launched at a conference in Brussels in October 2015.
