Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the signing of an agreement between the governments of Belize and Guatemala on the settlement of their territorial dispute

On the 11 December 2008, the European Union welcomed the signing of a special agreement between the governments of Belize and Guatemala at the headquarters of the OAS in Washington.

This was the first stage in a process designed to bring the longstanding territorial dispute between the two countries before the International Court of Justice. The agreement was an important demonstration of both countries' commitment to resolving the issue.
